Calf Tightness or Strain Treatment in Mineola, NY
MULLIGAN CONCEPT
Calf Tightness or Strain
A calf strain often feels like a sudden kick or pull in the back of the lower leg during running, tennis or pickleball. Ongoing calf tightness can come from a stiff ankle or overload. At Enhanced Physical Therapy in Mineola, we use progressive calf loading as the main treatment, with Mulligan ankle and lower leg techniques to restore comfortable movement.

Common signs of calf tightness or strain
- Sudden pull or pain in the calf during activity
- Tightness that limits walking or running
- Pain rising onto your toes
- Bruising or swelling in the calf after an injury
- Calf cramping or tightness after long walks
What causes it
Calf strains are common in runners and in racquet sports players over 40. Stiff ankles, fatigue and sudden increases in activity raise the risk.
How we examine it
We screen for blood clots and Achilles rupture first. Then we assess calf strength, ankle motion and how you walk and hop.
Mulligan techniques we use
- Weight-bearing ankle MWM. Restores ankle bending, which can ease calf load.
- Tibiofibular MWM. For stiffness in the lower leg joints.
- Compression and taping. Support during return to activity.
What the research says
We have not found research on Mulligan techniques for calf strains. Progressive loading is the main treatment. We use Mulligan techniques for related ankle stiffness when testing shows a clear change.
What else is in your treatment plan
Your plan includes progressive calf strengthening, walking and running progressions, ankle mobility and a staged return to sport.
How long recovery takes
Mild strains often recover in 2 to 4 weeks; more severe strains take 6 weeks or longer.
When to see a doctor first
Call your doctor, or get urgent care, if you have any of the following:
- Calf pain with swelling, warmth or redness, especially after surgery, travel or bed rest (possible blood clot): seek care the same day
- Shortness of breath or chest pain: call 911
- A snap at the back of the ankle and trouble rising onto your toes
- Calf pain when walking that eases with rest and returns at the same distance (may be circulation)
- Numbness in the foot
