Rib Related Chest Wall Pain Treatment in Mineola, NY
MULLIGAN CONCEPT
Rib Related Chest Wall Pain
Any new chest pain should be checked by a doctor first. When heart, lung and other medical causes have been ruled out, sore ribs at the front of the chest often come from irritated rib joints where the ribs meet the breastbone, or from stiffness in the mid back. At Enhanced Physical Therapy in Mineola, we use gentle Mulligan rib glides, thoracic SNAGs and taping that may reduce pain and help you breathe and move more comfortably.

your specific diagnosis and movement limitations to achieve optimal outcomes.
Common signs of rib related chest wall pain
- Sore ribs at the front of the chest, beside the breastbone
- Pain pressing on a rib
- Pain with deep breaths, coughing or hugging
- Pain lifting, reaching or twisting
- Stiffness in the mid back at the same time
What causes it
Rib joints at the front of the chest can be irritated by a long cough, heavy lifting, new exercise, carrying a child or a strain from sport. A stiff mid back can put extra load on these joints. The pain is often sharp and worrying, which is why medical clearance comes first.
How we examine it
We only treat chest wall pain after a doctor has checked you, or when you already have a clear diagnosis. We assess the ribs, breastbone area, mid back and breathing, and test whether gentle glides reduce pain with breathing or movement.
Mulligan techniques we use
- Rib MWMs with breathing. Gentle glides on the sore rib while you breathe in or move your arm.
- Thoracic SNAGs. Glides on the mid back, since stiffness there often adds to front chest pain.
- Taping. Gentle tape that may reduce pain during daily tasks.
- Breathing and mobility exercises. Home exercises to keep the ribs moving comfortably.
What the research says
We have not found trials of Mulligan techniques specifically for chest wall pain. Treatment is based on Mulligan rib and thoracic techniques and on how your pain responds during the visit. We use it as one part of a plan that includes exercise and activity changes.
What else is in your treatment plan
Your plan includes gentle manual therapy, mid back mobility, breathing exercises, posture and lifting advice and a gradual return to exercise.
How long recovery takes
Many people notice easier breathing and movement within a few visits. Rib related chest wall pain can take several weeks to settle fully.
If you are over 65
Chest pain in older adults must always be checked by a doctor first, because heart and lung causes are more common with age. Once you are cleared, we use light rib techniques and ask about osteoporosis, since fragile ribs need gentle pressure.
When to see a doctor first
Call your doctor, or get urgent care, if you have any of the following:
- New chest pain: see a doctor first
- Chest pain with shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, or pain spreading to the arm, neck or jaw: call 911
- Chest pain after a fall or blow (possible fracture)
- Fever, cough with colored phlegm or coughing up blood
- Swelling or redness over the breastbone

Frequently asked questions
How do I know my chest pain is from my ribs?
You can't be sure on your own. New chest pain must be checked by a doctor before physical therapy.
Is this the same as costochondritis?
Costochondritis is one cause of rib related chest wall pain. Your doctor makes that diagnosis; we treat the pain and stiffness.
Why do you treat my back for chest pain?
Mid back stiffness changes how the ribs move and can add to front chest pain.
Is the treatment gentle?
Yes. Mulligan techniques are slow, pain-free glides. If anything hurts, we stop or change it.
