Foggy or Wooly Head Feeling With Neck Stiffness in Mineola, NY
MULLIGAN CONCEPT
Foggy Head Feeling From the Neck
Some people with a stiff, painful upper neck describe a foggy, heavy or "wooly" feeling in the head that comes and goes with neck positions. It is not a medical diagnosis, and it has many possible causes, so your doctor should check it first. When it clearly goes with neck stiffness, gentle Mulligan neck techniques may help the neck move more comfortably, and some patients report the foggy feeling eases too.

Common signs of foggy head feeling from the neck
- A foggy, heavy or "wooly" feeling in the head
- The feeling gets worse with long periods at a screen or holding your head still
- Upper neck stiffness or pain at the base of the skull
- Mild unsteadiness or headaches at the back of the head
- Relief when the neck is moved or supported
What causes it
The upper neck sends a lot of information to the brain about head position. When it is stiff or irritated, some people describe a foggy or unsteady feeling. But brain fog also comes from sleep problems, medications, blood pressure, hormones, illness and many other causes, which is why medical review comes first.
How we examine it
We ask whether your doctor has checked the symptom, review medications and other health issues, and screen for signs that need medical attention. Then we assess the upper neck. If a gentle SNAG eases neck stiffness and the head feeling during the visit, that tells us neck treatment is worth trying.
Mulligan techniques we use
- Upper cervical SNAGs. Gentle glides on the top of the neck while you turn or nod your head.
- Headache SNAG. A sustained glide that some people find eases head pressure.
- Gentle traction. A light, sustained lift of the neck.
- Self-SNAGs. A home routine so you can manage the neck between visits.
What the research says
We have not found any study that measures a foggy or wooly head feeling as an outcome of Mulligan treatment. The related research is on neck related dizziness and headaches from the neck, where SNAGs have shown benefit. We treat the neck stiffness and track whether the head feeling changes, and we tell you honestly if it does not.
What else is in your treatment plan
Your plan focuses on neck movement, posture at the desk and in the car, neck strengthening and a short home routine.
How long recovery takes
If the feeling is linked to the neck, many people notice a change within the first few visits. If nothing changes after 3 or 4 visits, we refer you back to your doctor.
When to see a doctor first
Call your doctor, or get urgent care, if you have any of the following:
- New confusion, memory problems or trouble finding words: see a doctor promptly
- Foggy feeling after a head injury or concussion
- Sudden severe headache, vision changes, weakness or numbness: call 911
- Fainting or near fainting
- Ongoing fatigue, fever or weight loss

Frequently asked questions
Can a stiff neck cause a foggy head?
Some people report it, especially with upper neck stiffness. It is not well studied, and other causes need checking by your doctor first.
Is this the same as brain fog?
Not necessarily. Brain fog has many causes, from sleep to medications. We only treat when the feeling clearly goes with neck stiffness.
Will Mulligan treatment make the foggy feeling go away?
We cannot promise that. We treat the neck and track whether the head feeling improves, and refer you back if it does not.
Do I need to see my doctor first?
Yes, we recommend it, especially if the feeling is new, getting worse or comes with other symptoms.
