Mulligan Squeeze Technique for the Knee in Mineola, NY

MULLIGAN CONCEPT

Squeeze Technique for the Knee

The squeeze technique is a Mulligan method for knee pain linked to the meniscus. Dr. Kurian applies gentle, firm pressure over the sore spot on the knee joint line while you bend and straighten the knee. A sham-controlled trial found it improved knee function more than a sham treatment.

Certified Mulligan Practitioner Over 10 Years of Experience

Our clinics director is a Certified Mulligan Practitioner (CMP) with over a decade
of experience using this evidence-based approach. Each treatment is customized to
your specific diagnosis and movement limitations to achieve optimal outcomes.

How it works

  1. We find the tender spot along the knee joint line.
  2. Dr. Kurian applies a gentle, firm squeeze over that spot with his thumb.
  3. You bend the knee as far as is comfortable, then straighten it, while the pressure is held.
  4. We repeat and gradually increase the bend if it stays comfortable.
  5. We combine it with strengthening and, where needed, knee taping.

What it feels like

Firm pressure on the side of the knee. The bending movement should feel the same or easier.

Conditions we use it for

What the research says

In a sham-controlled trial (Hudson 2018), people with clinically suspected meniscus tears who had the squeeze technique improved more in knee function and activity scores than the sham group, but pain was not different between the groups. A 2022 review reached similar conclusions.

Safety

  • A knee that is locked and won't straighten needs a surgeon's opinion.
  • We don't use the technique on a hot, swollen knee.
  • If bending becomes more painful, we stop.
