Arm Pain That Starts in the Neck: Treatment in Mineola, NY
MULLIGAN CONCEPT
Arm Pain That Starts in the Neck
Pain, tingling or numbness that travels from the neck into the shoulder blade, arm or hand often comes from an irritated nerve in the neck, sometimes called a pinched nerve. At Enhanced Physical Therapy in Mineola, we use Mulligan spinal mobilization with arm movement, gentle SNAGs and traction, together with nerve-friendly exercise, and most people improve without surgery.

Common signs of arm pain that starts in the neck
- Neck pain spreading into the shoulder blade, arm or hand
- Tingling or numbness in the arm or fingers
- Arm weakness or reduced grip
- Pain worse looking up or turning toward the painful side
- Relief when you rest your hand on top of your head
What causes it
A nerve root can be irritated where it leaves the neck by a disc bulge or by narrowing from age-related changes. Long periods with the head forward, heavy lifting and injuries can set it off. Most cases settle with conservative care.
How we examine it
We check strength, reflexes, sensation and nerve tension tests, and screen for signs that the spinal cord is involved. Hand tingling can also come from the wrist, so we check both. Then we test whether a Mulligan glide makes the painful arm or neck movement easier.
Mulligan techniques we use
- Spinal Mobilization with Arm Movement (SMWAM). Dr. Kurian holds a gentle sideways glide on one neck vertebra while your arm is moved toward the position that brings on symptoms. The arm should move more freely and comfortably.
- Cervical SNAGs. Sustained glides during neck movement, used as symptoms settle.
- Gentle traction. A light lift of the neck that may ease arm symptoms.
- Self-treatment. Home techniques and nerve gliding exercises.
What the research says
Randomized trials have found that SNAGs and spinal mobilization with arm movement, added to exercise, can improve pain, neck function and arm symptoms in people with an irritated neck nerve. Neck pain guidelines support mobilization combined with exercise for neck pain with arm symptoms.
What else is in your treatment plan
Your plan includes Mulligan techniques, nerve gliding, deep neck and shoulder blade strengthening, and sleep and workstation advice.
How long recovery takes
Many people improve within 6 to 12 weeks. We monitor strength and sensation and refer you if they get worse.

Call your doctor, or get urgent care, if you have any of the following:

Most cases improve within 6 to 12 weeks with conservative care.
Why does resting my hand on my head help?
It takes tension off the irritated nerve, a common sign that the neck is the source.
Could it be carpal tunnel instead?
Hand tingling can come from the neck, the wrist or both. Our exam checks each.
When is surgery considered?
When weakness progresses, or symptoms do not improve after a good trial of conservative care.
