Spinal Mobilizations With Arm or Leg Movement in Mineola, NY
MULLIGAN CONCEPT
Spinal Mobilizations With Arm or Leg Movement
When pain, tingling or tightness travels into the arm or leg from the spine, Mulligan spinal mobilization with arm movement (SMWAM) or leg movement (SMWLM) treats both ends at once. Dr. Kurian holds a gentle sideways glide on one vertebra in the neck or low back while your arm or leg is moved into the position that brings on symptoms.

Certified Mulligan Practitioner Over 10 Years of Experience
Our clinics director is a Certified Mulligan Practitioner (CMP) with over a decade
of experience using this evidence-based approach. Each treatment is customized to
your specific diagnosis and movement limitations to achieve optimal outcomes.
How it works
- We find the arm or leg movement that brings on your symptoms, such as raising a straight leg.
- You lie on your side or stomach, or sit, and Dr. Kurian holds a sideways glide on the involved vertebra.
- Your arm or leg is moved toward the symptomatic position while the glide is held.
- If the arm or leg moves further with fewer symptoms, we repeat it.
- We add nerve gliding exercises for home.
What it feels like
Gentle pressure on one side of the spine while your arm or leg moves. Symptoms should ease, not increase.
Conditions we use it for
- Arm Pain That Starts in the Neck
- Low Back Pain and Disc Problems
- Sciatica
- Leg Pain That Starts in the Back
- Front of Thigh Nerve Symptoms (Femoral Nerve)
- Hamstring Problems
What the research says
In a double-blind randomized trial of 60 patients (Satpute 2019), adding spinal mobilization with leg movement to exercise improved leg pain, back pain and function short and long term. A 2025 meta-analysis of 21 trials found it reduced pain in sciatica. Trials of the arm version in people with arm pain from the neck have also reported benefit.
Safety
- We check strength, reflexes and sensation before treating nerve symptoms.
- Saddle numbness, bladder or bowel changes, or worsening weakness need urgent medical care, not manual therapy.
- If symptoms spread or increase during the technique, we stop.
