Elbow Stiffness Treatment in Mineola, NY

MULLIGAN CONCEPT

Elbow Stiffness

The elbow stiffens quickly after a fracture, dislocation, surgery or time in a sling, and losing full bend or straightening affects eating, dressing and lifting. At Enhanced Physical Therapy in Mineola, we use Mulligan elbow mobilization with movement to regain motion without forcing through pain, combined with strengthening.

your specific diagnosis and movement limitations to achieve optimal outcomes.

Common signs of elbow stiffness

  • Elbow that won't fully straighten or bend
  • Trouble bringing your hand to your face or mouth
  • Pain at the end of the movement
  • Trouble turning your palm up or down
  • Weak grip or lifting

What causes it

The elbow joint is tightly packed and stiffens easily after injury, swelling or immobilization.

How we examine it

We confirm any guidelines from your doctor, then measure motion, strength and function, and test Mulligan glides to see if motion increases without pain.

Mulligan techniques we use

  • Elbow flexion and extension MWM. A gentle glide of the forearm bones while you bend or straighten the elbow.
  • Radial head and forearm rotation MWM. A glide while you turn the palm up or down.
  • Self-MWM with a belt. A home version.

What the research says

Research on Mulligan techniques for elbow stiffness is limited to case reports. We use them when the elbow clearly moves further without pain during testing, alongside exercise.

What else is in your treatment plan

Your plan includes manual therapy, range of motion exercises, strengthening and practice of daily tasks.

How long recovery takes

Many people regain useful motion over 6 to 12 weeks.

When to see a doctor first

Call your doctor, or get urgent care, if you have any of the following:

  • Increasing pain and swelling after an injury
  • Numbness or tingling in the hand
  • Fever or a hot, swollen elbow
  • Elbow that suddenly locks
  • Wound problems after surgery
