Front of Thigh Nerve Symptoms (Femoral Nerve) Treatment in Mineola, NY
MULLIGAN CONCEPT
Front of Thigh Nerve Symptoms (Femoral Nerve)
Pain, burning or tingling down the front of the thigh, sometimes into the knee, can come from an irritated femoral nerve where it leaves the upper part of the low back. At Enhanced Physical Therapy in Mineola, we check the back, hip and thigh, and use Mulligan spinal mobilization with leg movement, adapted for the front of the thigh, along with nerve-friendly exercise.

Common signs of front of thigh nerve symptoms (femoral nerve)
- Pain, burning or tingling down the front of the thigh
- Symptoms that may reach the inside of the knee or shin
- Pain when standing up straight or stretching the hip back
- Weakness climbing stairs
- Back stiffness at the same time
What causes it
The femoral nerve comes from the upper part of the low back. Joint stiffness or disc irritation there, long periods of sitting, or tight tissue at the front of the hip can irritate it. Other causes, such as diabetes affecting the nerve, need medical care.
How we examine it
Before any hands-on treatment, we ask about your health and screen for anything that needs a doctor first. We check thigh strength, knee reflex, sensation and a nerve tension test lying on your side or stomach. We compare the hip and the back, then test a spinal glide while the knee bends or the hip moves back.
Mulligan techniques we use
- Spinal Mobilization with Leg Movement (femoral bias). A gentle glide on an upper low back vertebra while your knee bends or your hip moves backward.
- Lumbar SNAGs. Glides while you bend or arch, if the back is stiff.
- Nerve gliding. Gentle home movements that help the nerve slide more comfortably.
What the research says
We have not found trials of Mulligan techniques specifically for femoral nerve symptoms. The approach comes from Mulligan spinal mobilization with leg movement, which has research support in sciatica. We use it when testing shows a clear, pain-free change.
What else is in your treatment plan
Your plan includes manual therapy, nerve gliding, hip and thigh strengthening and advice on sitting and standing.
How long recovery takes
Many people improve over 4 to 8 weeks.
When to see a doctor first
Call your doctor, or get urgent care, if you have any of the following:
- Knee giving way or new weakness in the thigh
- Numbness in the groin or saddle area, or bladder or bowel changes
- Groin lump or pain after heavy lifting (possible hernia)
- Thigh pain with diabetes and weight loss
- Hip pain after a fall in an older adult

Frequently asked questions
Can back problems cause front of thigh pain?
Yes. The femoral nerve starts in the upper low back, so irritation there can be felt down the front of the thigh.
Is this the same as a quad strain?
No. A quad strain is a muscle injury. Nerve symptoms often include burning or tingling. We check both.
Could it be my hip?
Hip problems can cause front thigh pain too, which is why we examine both.
Is it serious?
Usually not, but new weakness or numbness needs prompt review.
