Hip Pain and Stiffness Relief in Mineola, NY
MULLIGAN CONCEPT
Hip Pain and Stiffness
Hip pain and stiffness make walking, putting on socks, climbing stairs and getting in and out of the car harder. Common causes include hip arthritis, a pinching hip in active people, and outer hip tendon pain. At Enhanced Physical Therapy in Mineola, we use Mulligan hip mobilization with a belt to help the hip move with less pain, then strengthen it and improve your walking.

Common signs of hip pain and stiffness
- Pain in the groin, front of the hip or outer thigh
- Stiffness first thing in the morning
- Trouble putting on socks and shoes
- Pain walking longer distances or on stairs
- Pinching pain squatting or sitting low
What causes it
Hip arthritis is a gradual change in the joint that becomes more common with age. Active people may have a hip shape that pinches with deep bending. Outer hip pain often comes from overloaded tendons. Strength and activity level strongly affect how much each limits you.
How we examine it
Before any hands-on treatment, we ask about your health and screen for anything that needs a doctor first. We assess hip motion, strength, walking and balance, and check the back, pelvis and knee. With a belt around your thigh, we test a sideways glide during your painful movement.
Mulligan techniques we use
- Lateral glide hip MWM with a belt. A belt holds a gentle sideways glide while you bend or rotate the hip.
- Inferior glide MWM. A downward glide that may ease pinching in deep bending.
- Weight-bearing hip MWM. The glide applied while you stand or step, so the change carries into walking.
- Self-MWM. A home version using a belt.
What the research says
In a placebo-controlled trial of 40 older adults with hip arthritis (Beselga 2016), one session of Mulligan hip mobilization reduced pain and improved movement and function. A review rates the hip arthritis evidence as moderate quality. Guidelines recommend exercise as first-line care for hip arthritis, so we always combine the two.
What else is in your treatment plan
Your plan includes hip MWM, progressive hip and leg strengthening, balance work, a walking program and advice on daily tasks.
How long recovery takes
Many patients feel freer movement after the first session. Lasting improvement in strength and walking usually takes 8 to 12 weeks.
If you are over 65
Hip arthritis can make walking, putting on socks and getting in and out of the car hard. We focus on the tasks that keep you independent and include balance training to lower your risk of falls. Mulligan hip techniques with a belt are gentle and suit most older patients.
When to see a doctor first
Call your doctor, or get urgent care, if you have any of the following:
- Sudden hip pain and inability to bear weight after a fall: go to the emergency room
- Fever or a hot, swollen hip
- Severe, constant night pain
- History of cancer or unexplained weight loss
- Hip pain with long-term steroid use and sudden worsening

Frequently asked questions
Can physical therapy help hip arthritis?
Yes. Exercise is a first-line treatment, and Mulligan mobilization may ease pain and stiffness.
Will I need a hip replacement?
Not always. Many people manage well with exercise. If you do need surgery, being stronger helps recovery.
Is groin pain a sign of a hip problem?
Groin pain is a common sign of hip joint problems. An exam can confirm it.
Why does my outer hip hurt lying on my side?
Often the gluteal tendons are irritated. Changing sleep position and strengthening usually help.
