Wrist Ganglion: Treating the Pain and Stiffness in Mineola, NY
MULLIGAN CONCEPT
Wrist Ganglion
A ganglion is a fluid-filled lump that most often appears on the back or palm side of the wrist. Many are painless and some go away on their own. When a ganglion comes with wrist pain, stiffness or weak grip, Enhanced Physical Therapy in Mineola can help with Mulligan wrist mobilization with movement, compression and load advice. We do not claim to remove the lump itself.

your specific diagnosis and movement limitations to achieve optimal outcomes.
Common signs of wrist ganglion
- A smooth, round lump on the wrist
- Wrist ache, especially pushing up or doing push-ups
- Stiffness bending the wrist back
- Weak grip
- The lump gets bigger with activity and smaller with rest
What causes it
Ganglions form from the joint or tendon lining. The cause is often unclear, but they are more common with repetitive wrist loading and after wrist injuries. Wrist stiffness and the way you load the joint can add to the pain.
How we examine it
We check that the lump looks and behaves like a typical ganglion and refer you to your doctor if it does not, or if it has not been diagnosed. We assess wrist motion and grip and test whether a glide reduces pain with movement.
Mulligan techniques we use
- Wrist MWM. A gentle glide of the wrist bones while you bend or extend the wrist.
- Compression and taping. Gentle support that some people find eases pain during activity.
- Load advice. Changes to hand position for push-ups, yoga, lifting and keyboard work.
What the research says
We have not found research on Mulligan treatment for ganglion cysts. Physical therapy aims to ease the pain and stiffness that can come with a ganglion. Your doctor may recommend watching it, draining it or, sometimes, surgery.
What else is in your treatment plan
Your plan includes wrist mobility, grip strengthening, load and position changes and coordination with your doctor if the lump needs medical treatment.
How long recovery takes
Wrist pain and stiffness often improve over 4 to 8 weeks. The lump itself may stay, shrink or come back.
When to see a doctor first
Call your doctor, or get urgent care, if you have any of the following:
- A lump that is hard, growing quickly or not clearly a ganglion: see your doctor
- Numbness or tingling in the hand or fingers
- Redness, heat or fever
- A lump that appeared after an injury
- Pain that is constant and severe

Frequently asked questions
Can physical therapy get rid of a ganglion cyst?
We don't claim to remove the cyst. We treat the wrist pain, stiffness and weakness that can come with it.
Should I hit a ganglion with a book?
No. That old remedy can cause injury and the cyst often returns.
Do ganglion cysts go away on their own?
Many do over time, though some come back.
When should I see a doctor?
If the lump has not been diagnosed, grows quickly, is hard, or causes numbness.
