How Medicare covers physical therapy
- Medicare Part B covers outpatient physical therapy when it is medically necessary.
- After you meet the yearly Part B deductible, you usually pay 20 percent of the Medicare-approved amount. A supplemental (Medigap) plan may cover some or all of that.
- There is no hard yearly limit on therapy visits. Above a yearly spending threshold, your therapist documents why continued care is needed.
- Medicare does not require a referral to start, but your doctor signs off on your therapy plan of care.
Medicare Advantage plans
Medicare Advantage plans set their own networks. Some are out of network for us, including Cigna Medicare Advantage and UnitedHealthcare Medicare Choice. Call us with your plan card and we will check your coverage before your first visit. See the full list on our insurance page.
