Plantar Fasciitis Physical Therapy in Mineola, NY
MULLIGAN CONCEPT
Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis causes sharp heel and arch pain, especially with your first steps in the morning or after sitting. At Enhanced Physical Therapy in Mineola, we use Mulligan subtalar mobilization with movement and taping, which a randomized trial found helped heel pain, together with a calf and foot loading program.

Common signs of plantar fasciitis
- Sharp heel or arch pain with your first steps in the morning
- Pain after sitting that eases as you walk
- Pain after long periods of standing
- Tenderness under the heel
- Pain worse barefoot or on hard floors
What causes it
The plantar fascia is a thick band under the foot that becomes overloaded and sensitive. Tight calves, a stiff ankle, sudden increases in walking or running, long periods of standing, footwear and body weight all contribute.
How we examine it
Before any hands-on treatment, we ask about your health and screen for anything that needs a doctor first. We assess the foot, ankle and calf, and how you walk. We test whether a rearfoot glide or taping reduces pain with walking or heel raises.
Mulligan techniques we use
- Subtalar MWM. A gentle glide of the heel bone while you move the foot, to ease rearfoot stiffness.
- Ankle MWM. Improves ankle bending, which can reduce strain on the plantar fascia.
- Mulligan heel and arch taping. Tape that supports the foot during walking.
What the research says
A randomized trial (Kashif 2021, 60 patients) found subtalar MWM plus rigid taping reduced pain and improved function more than conventional care plus taping. The 2023 JOSPT heel pain guideline cites this trial as supporting manual therapy. We combine it with loading and footwear advice.
What else is in your treatment plan
Your plan includes MWM, taping, calf and foot strengthening, a heel raise loading program, footwear advice and a gradual return to walking or running.
How long recovery takes
Most people improve over 6 to 12 weeks.
When to see a doctor first
Call your doctor, or get urgent care, if you have any of the following:
- Heel pain after a fall or jump with swelling
- Pain when squeezing the heel from both sides (possible stress fracture)
- Numbness or burning in the foot
- Heel pain with fever or redness
- Heel pain in both feet with other joints swollen

Frequently asked questions
Why does my heel hurt in the morning?
The plantar fascia tightens overnight and is stretched suddenly with your first steps.
How long does plantar fasciitis last?
Often 6 to 12 months without treatment. Physical therapy may shorten that.
What shoes help?
Supportive shoes with cushioning and a slight heel usually help. We advise based on your foot.
Does taping help?
Mulligan taping can reduce pain while you build strength.
